BEING BORN A FILIPINO

We often hear, "Only in the Philippines".

"Only" what?

The current tourism slogan, "It's more fun in the Philippines" gives us a positive image of the Philippines. But the catchy phrase "Only" connotes something funny, not fun, or crazy, which is funnier. In other words, "Only" creates a negative image about Filipinos. not the Philippines.

For instance, it is only in the Philippines where traffic and pedestrian signs are mere "cosmetics"; it is only in the Philippines where "jaywalking" is a way of life; it is only in the Philippines where the roads are used for funeral wakes lasting for weeks, simultaneously with gambling and parties, as well as basketball games and laundry areas; it is only in the Philippines where former Presidents are exiled, deposed, charged and/or detained as well as pardoned and able to bounce back to political limelight; it is only in the Philippines where a graft buster isi impeached, a Chief Justice is impeached and a President is impeached; etc.

On a more postive side, it is only in the Philippines where enemies can become friends easily; or where a forgiving heart flourishes; or where a bayanihan spirit still lives; where people are always willing to help; etc.

It is also in the Philippines where words do not have an exact English translation or can be used in many ways like "tira-tira at tinga-tinga", "bababa at bababa", "turo-turo at kare-kare" or "ukay-ukay at utay-utay" and many more.

Further, it is more fun in the Philippines because our country is so beautiful, its people are so gifted, our culture is so diversed, our natural resources and environment are prestine, and we are truly hospitable people. One will never get lost, and one will always feel at home though away from home. That's the Philippines, my countrymen. Our Philippines.

Being born a Filipino is a gift. A blessing. Be proud of it. Be a good example. Mabuhay!
