COMELEC FAVORS TERM EXTENSION FOR BARANGAY AND SK OFFICIALS

Last June 28, 2012 in Manila and in response to the letter of National Liga President to Chairman Sixto Brillantes, the Commission on Elections through its Law Department has interposed no objection to the passage of a law which will extend the Barangay and SK elections. According to the COMELEC, it will be a welcome respite (1) since it will give the sufficient time to prepare in as much as the interval between the May 13, 2012 National and Local Elections and October 28, 2013 Barangay and SK elections would be so close thereby resulting to overlapping activities particularly post-election process, (2) for budgetary considerations as it will avoid holding of elections in one year. It added that it would be for the best interest of all if these elections are scheduled sometime in 2014 or 2015. Of course, COMELEC can do what it must under the law, with or without the law, but it also admitted that there were “some glitches which could have been avoided had the Commission been allotted sufficient time for its preparations”, as stated in the letter sent to the National Liga.
