HOUSE BILL PROPOSED TERM EXTENSION OF BARANGAY OFFICIALS

The Committee on Local Government of the House of Representatives submitted its Committee Report on House Bill No. 6316 in substitution of House Bills No. 4991, 5724, 5991, 6055 and 6072 entitled "AN ACT CHANGING THE TERM OF OFFICE OF BARANGAY AND SANGGUNIANG KABATAAN OFFICIALS FROM THREE 93) YEARS TO FIVE (5) YEARS. This will in effect amend Republic Act No. 9164 and if approved into law the synchronized barangay and sangguniang kabataan elections shall be held on the last Monday of October 2015 and every five years thereafter. The term of office of those who will be elected in the 2015 elections shall commence at noon of December 1 next following their election.


The bill further provides that all incumbent barangay and sangguniang barangay officials shall remain in office until sooner removed or suspended for cause intil their successors shall have been elected and qualified. Those serving as ex officio members of the sangguniang bayan, panlungsod or panlalawigan shall continue to serve as such.  The Liga ng mga Barangay at the municipal, city and provincial levels shall hold elections within 30 days after the next elections.
